This week I proudly launched KC Homebirth. The founder and owner, Cheryl Gates, was my midwife for my son Jacob and brought him into the world last fall. We bonded over life-stuff and I was always completely trusting of her instincts and expertise; she and her team took amazing care of me – emotionally and physically – during my pregnancy and birth and I could not think of a better way to evangelize than by bringing her online.
Back in the day, Cheryl had a basic WordPress website that was mainly used for blogging. She had fantastic SEO and was on the top of Google’s ranking for midwives in the Kansas City area. But through a series of personal setbacks, the website fell by the wayside and others zoomed ahead of her business in online searches.
Although in a female-centric industry, Cheryl’s aesthetic doesn’t veer overly feminine. As we were designing her logo I presented her with several choices (including some retro fonts and scripts) but knew in my heart the two she would narrow it down to – and she did. She is a die hard Royals fan and the logo pays tribute to the lines of their logo and an homage to her hometown.
In the process of narrowing down her brand and style, I presented her with several style tiles to choose from:
Can you tell which one she gravitated towards based on her final website? Yep, far right with the coral action color. The palette lends itself to softness without being overly feminine and still retains a timeless, peaceful feeling.
We opted for a clean look, lots of white space, with purposeful use of the coral action color. We wanted all action to be directed at getting people to book a free consultation – which was also a though out form that will help Cheryl’s team find the right clients for their practice. We also included very user-friendly FAQs (with easy drop down menu navigation for the multitude of questions) and process driven copy on the services pages.
Final Client Thoughts
When we did a walk-thru of the website Cheryl cried with joy. I take that as the highest compliment. She said “it was always what she wanted and never knew how to get.” This next step in her business is now allowing her to fully step into her role of businesswoman and let go of some personal things in her past. She now feels empowered to act on a more professional playing field, taking on ideal clients and feeling comfortable in her authority role. She is sought after in the Midwest region and this new website will only expand her business and allow her to reach a multitude of other women who are seeking the exceptional care she offers.
